Pausing at the end of each ayah to reflect on the meaning, is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing of Allah be upon him. Um Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, described how the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, would recite:
“Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim”
and according to one report, he would pause and then say,
“Alhamdu Lillahi Rabbi’l-Alamin, ar-Rahman ir-Rahim.”
Then according to one report, he would pause, then say,
“Maliki yawm id-din”
and he, peace be upon him, would break up his recitation ayah by ayah. (Recorded in Abu Dawud /4001)
Pausing in this way at the end of each ayah is a Sunnah, even if the meaning continues in the next ayah. And Allah knows best.
