There are a number of factors that assist a person’s du’a being accepted by Allah. These are mentioned in the Qur’an and Sunnah as being factors that guarantee, or greatly increase, the chances of one’s du’as being accepted. These are therefore things that we strive to implement and achieve.
There is no doubt that the single greatest factor that aids a person’s du’a in being accepted is sincerity. The more sincere we are in making a du’a, the greater the chance of response.
Let’s reflect on the story of the Prophet Yunus, peace be upon him. He was thrown overboard, then swallowed by a whale, only to be taken to the very depths of the ocean. Darkness covered with darkness – the darkness of the whale’s belly, along with the darkness of the sea, along with the darkness of the night! But he did not despair, and instead called out, with a pure sincerity the like of which we cannot even imagine:
“Verily, there is no deity except You, You are glorified and above all deficiencies! Verily I was of the wrongdoers” (Surah al-Anbiya:87)
So what was the response from the One Who heard him from the depths of the ocean inside the whale’s stomach?
“So We responded to his call, and saved him from the distress (that he was in). And likewise do We save the believers.” (Surah al-Anbiya:88)
Where is our sincerity compared to the sincerity of the Prophet Yunus, peace be upon him? How often do we call on Allah? With sincerity?
All praises and glory be to Allah who orders us:
“And make du’a to Him, sincerely, for it is the religion.” (Surah al-Araf:29)
