Al-Ghafur (The Ever-Forgiving)

“He is al-Ghafur (the Ever-Forgiving), Ar-Rahim (the Most Merciful).”(Surah al-Ahqaf:8)

Allah’s forgiveness and mercy are infinite. He, all praises and glory be to Him, gives all of His servants countless opportunities to repent and purify themselves. If we sincerely repent when we have done something wrong, and refrain from doing that thing again, Allah promises to forgive us, because He is al-Ghafur, the Ever-Forgiving, and He loves to forgive His servants. He, all praises and glory be to Him, tells us in the Qur’an:

“Why should Allah punish you if you are thankful and have faith?” (Surah an-Nisa:147)

In fact, even ungrateful people who are ignorant of religion may enjoy many blessings in this life, because of Allah’s forgiveness and compassion. He tells us:

“And if Allah were to punish men for that they have earned, He would not leave a moving (living) creature on the surface of the earth; but He gives them respite to an appointed term, and when their term comes then verily, Allah is Ever All-Seer of His slaves!” (Surah Fatir:45)

Allah grants enough time for anyone who is willing to receive admonition. He sends Messengers who warn and inform them about their purpose in life, and what is allowed and what is prohibited. To those who avail themselves to guidance, Allah promises mercy and forgiveness, but those who insist on denial, despite His revelations, face the promise of the wrath of Allah, all praises and glory be to Him. He tells us:

“I am Ever-Forgiving to anyone who repents, believes, and does righteous good deeds, and then remains constant in doing them.” (Surah Ta Ha:82)

“But to those who do evil in ignorance and then, after that, repent and put things right, to them your Lord is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Surah an-Nahl:119)

“O you who believe! Have fear of Allah and faith in His Messenger. He will give you a double portion of His mercy, grant you a Light by which to walk, and forgive you. Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Surah al-Hadid:28)
