The thirteenth juz’ of the Qur’an contains the last part of Surah Yusuf (Joseph) from ayah 53 to 111, all of Surah Ar-Ra’d (Thunder) and all of Surah Ibrahim (Abraham) the thirteenth and fourteenth chapters of the Qur’an.
Surah Yusuf was also revealed in Makkah, after the famous year called the Year of Difficulty. Surah Ar-Ra’d and Surah Ibrahim were also revealed in Makkah around this time, during the last stages of the Prophet’s mission there.
“Thus did We give full authority to Yusuf (Joseph) in the land, to take possession therein, when or where he likes. We bestow of Our Mercy on whom We will, and We make not to be lost the reward of Al-Muhsinun (the good doers).” (Surah Yusuf 12:56)
“And Ar-Ra’d (thunder) glorifies and praises Him, and so do the angels because of His awe. He sends the thunderbolts, and therewith strikes whom He wills, yet they (disbelievers) dispute about Allah. And He is Mighty in strength and Severe in punishment.” (Surah Ar-Rad 13:13)
“And if there had been a Qur’an with which mountains could be moved (from their places), or the earth could be cloven asunder, or the dead could be made to speak (it would not have been other than this Qur’an). But the decision of all things is certainly with Allah. Have not then those who believed yet known that had Allah willed, He could have guided all mankind? And a disaster will not cease to strike those who disbelieved because of their (evil) deeds or it (i.e. the disaster) settles close to their homes, until the Promise of Allah comes to pass. Certainly Allah beaks not His Promise.” (Surah Ar-Rad 13:31)
“The parable of those who disbelieved in their Lord is that their works are as ashes, on which the wind blows furiously on a stormy day; they shall not be able to get aught of what they have earned. That is the straying far away (from the Straight Path).” (Surah Ibrahim 14:18)
“And Shaitan (Satan) will say when the matter has been decided: “Verily, Allah promised you a promise of truth. And I too promised you, but I betrayed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you, and you responded to me. So blame me not, and blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I deny your former act in associating me (Satan) as a partner with Allah (by obeying me in the life of the world). Verily, there is a painful torment for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers).” (Surah Ibrahim 14:22)
“This (Qur’an) is a Message for mankind (and a clear proof against them), in order that they may be warned thereby, and that they may know that He is the only One Ilah (God-Allah) – (none had the right to be worshipped but Allah) – and that men of understanding may take heed.” (Surah Ibrahim 14:52)
Surah Yusuf is called the best of stories (12:3) and tells of the life of the Prophet Yusuf, peace be upon him, in great detail. The story begins in the Twelfth Juz’ and opens in the Thirteenth Juz’ with Yusuf, peace be upon him, being given authority as a Minister over the store-houses Egypt (12:55). During the seven-year drought, Yusuf’s brothers visit Egypt to get food for their family. Upon seeing his brothers, Yusuf recognizes them though they did not recognize him. Yusuf, peace be upon him, requests that the next time they come, they bring their youngest brother Benyameen (Benjamin) with them. When the brothers return with their youngest brother, Yusuf takes him aside and tells him his true identity. Yusuf, peace be upon him, then plots a theft case where his youngest brother is found guilty of theft when he is truly innocent and is detained from his family, so he could stay with him (12:70-81). Later, when the family faces poverty they come back to Yusuf, peace be upon him, and he then helps them. He then reveals his identity asking them to come and live with him. On their return they fall down prostrate to him, fulfilling the vision of the dream revealed at the beginning of the Surah.
Surah Ar-Ra’d has as its central theme aspects of Allah’s Revelation of Himself to mankind and His dealings with them. There is the revelation to His Prophet’s which comes as spoken word in the language of the people and the parallel revelation of His Signs in the laws of natures on this earth and in the heavens. His Signs are there but it is mankind who chooses to deny them. The Message of Muhammad is Truth, but the people deny it, asking ‘Why is not a sign sent down to him from his Lord?” (13:27).
Surah Ibrahim continues with this theme and gives warnings and admonition to those who disbelieve. Those who prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter and hinder men from the path of Allah have gone far astray (14:3). The story of Musa (Moses), peace be upon him, is referred to again here, highlighting that he was sent with Signs from his Lord. We are reminded of the people of Nuh (Noah) and ‘Ad and Thamud and those that came after them, and how they disbelieved in the Message. Shaitan (Satan) promises us, but his promise is false. He, may Allah curse him, only calls us, it is us who respond, and he will distance himself from us and our actions on the Day of Judgement (14:22). We are told of when the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), peace be upon him, built the Ka’bah at Makkah and the beautiful dua’s that he made (14:35-41).
